- 5 fresh basil leaves with stems sliced, or you may leave whole
- 10 oz whole-wheat shaped pasta penne, shells, fusilli
- 2 tbsp Parmesan or Romano cheese freshly grated
- 1 canned tomatoes good-quality, preferably packed in its own juice, drained, reserve liquid
- 0.25 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 0.25 tsp kosher salt
- 5 clove garlic minced
